Confirmation: Local Natives = epic live
As effing sick as these raw vids from SXSW are, it only makes me sad...sad that I didnt get tickets to their May 8th show at Great Scott in Allston! Epic fail Steve. Never did I expect a group of musicians huddled together surrounded by beat up junk cars and dying trees to sound so good! I guess I'll just live vicariously through gem vids such as these (thank you Pitchfork...again) and pray they come back to the 'beautiful' North East soon!

"Aw' c'mon" Show Review - The Soft Pack @ Great Scott. Allston, MA
I went to see The Soft Pack last night at Great Scott in Allston. I've been digging thier self titled album a lot and at $10 a ticket, I'd be an asshole not to go. The opening bands were Beaters & NODZZZ. I missed almost all of the Beaters' set but caught all of NODZZZ...unfortunately, could have done without. I really don't like to hate on bands, but this one was not one of my favorites. I wont harp on them any longer, just not a fan. Anyway, the Soft Pack came out and played a great set. I was blown away by their talent. It always gets me when I see dudes younger than me ripping it up on stage, touring and living the dream. Not to mention releasing one hell of a great album (Self Titled - Feb 2010). Hailing from sunny San Diego, it only makes sense their record solicits summer suns and warm surf tones. Really energetic, punk influenced, garage rock is what I like and is what the Soft Pack are all about. I 100% recommend checking them out if they make their way to your neck of the woods this year.

New Video: Titus Andronicus - "A More Perfect Union"
Titus Andronicus | MySpace Music Videos
Okay, I've been meaning to write about this album ever since I first laid ears on it, and with this video release for "A More Perfect Union", I felt it was a sign that today should be that day. The Monitor came out earlier this month and I was immediately blown away. Titus Andronicus created an intricately raw and layered rock album guaranteed to be in the running for 'album of the year'. They have an amazing ability to fuse lo-fi punk and alt rock to produce a rough yet fantastically powerful indie rock sound that I cannot get enough of. Seriously, I listen to this album in full at least 3 times a week. Oh, and I just found out they recorded The Monitor in a barn in New Paltz, NY. If you've been to NP then you understand why that's cool.
If your a fan of the rough, punk inspired, rock that bands like Japandroids, No Age, or the Soft Pack create, then be sure to check out Titus Andronicus!
The video is sweet but unfortunately, the song is cut down from the full 7:10 to a weak 3:34. You need to hear the track in its entirety to really appreciate what they've done here. Track one below.

Crushing Hard: National Zooey Deschanel Day
So the new She & Him came out today and I have absolutely no problem admitting to listening and loving their stuff. Seriously, what's not to like? It's extremely happy, upbeat, oldie's inspired, fun! With brilliant songwriting from M. Ward paired with the oh so gorgeous and multi-talented singer/actress Zooey Deschanel, the cleverly titled She & Him are an indie-folk duo guaranteed to appeal to audiences of all extremes. "Volume Two" (Merge Records. March 2010) literally picks up right where "Volume One" left off. On Two, we find 13 tracks of consistently lovely folk-pop assured to get you smiling while hanging in your apartment, going for a drive, or going for a walk in the sun.
And while the music is great, my personal favorite part is the imagery that accompanies "She & Him" Is there a more attractive woman out there?...not possible.

New Hold Steady Track! "Hurricane J" via Pitchfork
This is going to be a great summer! New Hold Steady album is set to drop May 4th, just as the sun is finding its place permanently affixed in the New England skies. The Hold Steady could easily be considered one of my favorite bands of the recent years. Last summer I had the chance to check them out at the Virgin Free Fest in Baltimore, MD and it was without a doubt one of the best live performances I've seen. I don't think I could recommend a better band for sunny summertime sing alongs..drinking beers and toasting to good vibes.
Track isn't available yet on lala.com but Pitchfork was able to share it with us. Check it out here. I plan on posting it here once I can get my hands on the mp3. For now, check out these vids.

Video/Review: Surfer Blood - Swim
So I went to see Surfer Blood Tuesday night at Great Scott in Allston. They played with Doomstar! and Turbo Fruits. Doomstar! was really sick and I could have done without 75% of Turbo Fruits' set. Which wasn't really expected after giving their album Echo Kid a listen. Anyhow, Surfer Blood were amazing and I've been playing Astro Coast a lot lately due to it's greatness. I'm fkng ridiculously busy at work right now, so I figured throwing up their new video for "Swim" will suffice for now. You will hear this song on the radio in...ohh, 4 months? Maybe sooner.
Also check out the new Insound Studio Sessions for 3 additional Surfer Blood vids; Twin Peaks, Swim and Harmonix.

Review: The Who's Half-Time Show
So am I the only one that thought The Who's half-time performance last night was really good? A lot of reviews I'm reading/hearing are extremely anti. However, it seems to be a generational thing. Older fans are making comments like "they're fossils" or "when I was a kid, The Who were actually sweet live" and "last night was just sad"...blah blah, shit like that. Well, I've had the chance to see The Who live at the Virgin Music Festival in Baltimore back in 2006, and it was phenomenal! Last night's performance reminded me of that experience, so maybe I was biased. Either way, I would like to think or at least hope that kids my age respected last night's performance; the way it sounded (tight) and the way it looked (enough f-ing lazers?!). I don't know. I was drunk, full, and stoked the Saints were only down 4 points at the half. Plus I absolutely love The Who. So even if the world disagrees, I still gave last night's show two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Early Review: Vampire Weekend - Contra
Well I copped this HIGHLY anticipated record from Vampire Weekend a few days early from a source that shall remain nameless, and I'm more than stoked to give it a listen. Vampire has picked up right where they left off; blending feel good Paul Simon inspired indie pop with a variety of mellow flowing sounds to produce a 10 track 37minute compilation of sheer melodic joy. Okay, maybe I'm a bit biased because I dug their self-titled debut so much (2008), but give Contra a listen and ye shan't be disappointed. I was kind of hoping for more of a late Winter/early Spring release due to the undeniable upbeat sunny vibe Vampire creates, but there's no doubt I'll be playing this album throughout 2010.
Vamp start the record off right with the upbeat "Horchata"
Check out the funky-off beat fun of their single "Cousins"...pretty rad.
A hint of auto-tune is found here on "California English". Perhaps an influence of Rostam Batmanglij's side project Discovery? (see Tweed's Best of 2009 for a track from Discovery)
And, prob my favorite track (upon first listen) "Giving Up The Gun"
Also, fun Vamp fact..."The name Vampire Weekend comes from a movie that Ezra Koenig made in the summer of his freshman year at college." [Last.fm] You can watch the trailer on Youtube, or right here...
